How many times have you been in a conversation about ATVs or Side-by-Sides and the subject turns to very complicated suspension terminology? How about this for confusing; the conversation is actually about thermo-hydraulic dispersion of kinetic energy.
Yeah, try that one on for size as a conversation starter. I know when I first started studying my chassis and the suspension attached to it, I was baffled at some of the words I would hear thrown out like everyone should know what they meant. It was those very terms that would make my machine better or worse. In this article, we hope to educate anyone needing to brush up on what these key words mean and help you understand the real potential of your machine by building your knowledge base.
Most basic shocks will be preload adjustable only. This adjustment is made with either a threaded collar on the shock body with a locking ring that gives the best amount of adjustment or a five-way cam collar type that is limited to those five levels of adjustment.
Turning the pressure up makes the ride stiffer and also raises the ride height of the machine. Taking preload out or loosening the preload on the springs will make the ride softer but can cause the suspension to bottom out easier. It controls how fast the shock shaft will compress. There are two types of compression adjusters, which will typically be an adjustment knob or slotted screw head. These adjusters control the flow of fluid in the shock.
If your shocks are too stiff, you can slow the flow of fluid down.
This adjustment is most popular on sport ATVs and UTVs for controlling the suspension when hitting jumps or whoops and even g-outs in the trails. You might even hear the talk of High and Low speed compression damping. This is attributed to features available on higher dollar shock systems. This means the damping capabilities are divided into low and high segments for finer adjustments. Individual adjusters will be available on the shocks where this is possible.
Rebound: This adjustment comes into play after you compress your suspension when hitting the bumps and jumps in the trail or on the track. Rebounding is when the shock spring is pushing the shock shaft back out of the shock body after it was compressed to return to its uncompressed state. This setting controls the speed of that rebound.
This gives a more controlled return of the suspension once compressed and can help you maintain control of the quad or Side-by-Side. This adjuster will also be either a slotted screw adjuster or collar that spins around the base of the shock. Ride Height: This is the height of the suspension measured at given points with a fully equipped rider with all of their gear.Which suspension is the best choice? Free Sag: This term refers to the machines amount of suspension sag under its own weight without a rider. This is also commonly referred to as static sag. Rider Sag: This refers to the total amount of suspension travel is used when a fully equipped rider is sitting in their riding position on the machine.
Shock Knowledge: Understanding How Your Shocks Work
Typically this will be 30 percent of the total suspension travel. Clicks: This simple term is in reference to the adjustments made on your shocks. Some shock adjusters click when turned and this has just stuck as the go-to adjective. Each notch of the adjuster is referred to as a click. Bottoming: This is the action of compressing the shock completely and physically bottoming the shock. The spring is completely compressed, often resulting in a harsh feeling for the rider.
This is where your compression adjustments come into play.Whether your new quad is fresh from the factory or out of someone's garage, the chances of its suspension being set up correctly for you is pretty slim. After a bit of riding you may even have noticed things are not perfect. Yet like most of us, you probably just ride it as is without adjusting anything. There is a lot to be gained by maximizing the performance of your quad's suspension.
Most folks long for cool, expensive aftermarket stuff but never tune the oft capable stock parts they already own. Haven't a clue where to begin? This guide should help you identify what adjustments are available and get you going in the right direction.Apache log cleanup
There are six types of external adjustments available on current shocks: low- and high-speed compression damping on high-end shocksrebound damping, preload adjustment, ride-height adjustment and crossover spacers. However, you will not find all of them on a single shock. Preload, low-speed compression and rebound are the most commonly found on production ATV shocks. Preload This is the spring-tension adjustment on most shocks.
On utility vehicles' shocks and even some sport quads' front ends, this is your only means of compression adjustment. You can either add more spring pressure to stiffen up your suspension or back it off to get a plusher ride. Many shocks have a collar with several slots; turning it changes the spring pressure or amount of preload. A large set of channel locks makes this job simple.
Wrapping a rag around the collar before you put a clamp on it will prevent you from scratching the finish. The other common form of preload adjustment is double locking rings. After loosening the lock ring or nut, you simply turn the adjuster ring the nut that is against the spring to make a change then tighten the locknut. There are special tools made to loosen and spin these types of locknuts, but a hammer and punch work fine.
The trick is to place your ATV on a stand and get the wheel off the ground, then break loose the locknut with the hammer and punch. Instead of using the punch to spin the preload nut, try spinning the spring with your hand. It is a wire clip that slides into a groove in the shock body; you simply move the clip up or down in the grooves to change the load.
Sometimes you can just pull on the spring to release the tension enough to move the clip; in most cases, the load is too stiff to do so. Note: Make sure your wrench is free of burrs that may mar the shock shaft. Use a rat-tail file to deburr the open end of the wrench if needed. Again with the quad on a stand and possibly some extra help, slip the wrench through the spring and around the shock shaft near the shock body. Now holding the wrench in place a job for your helpyou spin the spring, taking the load off the shock.
This allows you to move the preload clip. If you have an ATV with only preload adjustment in the form of the slotted collar, all you can do is try different settings to make the ride more comfortable. When coil-overs aren't an option, you can still get premium valving with QA1's stock mount shocks and struts.

Image Unavailable Image not available for Color:.The new Strike has a cc EFI-fed V-twin that makes a claimed 65 horsepower and does 70 mph in high range and 50 mph in low. Strikes have a sporty, non-tilting bed with a pound capacity, highback bucket seats, aggressive styling, and a tilt steering wheel with EPS assist.
HPG piggyback shocks deliver 11 inches of travel with long A-arms, and they have adjustable compression and rebound damping, plus ring preload adjusters. Four-wheel hydraulic brakes and a parking brake on the center console are also sporty, and the Strike has a locking front differential and unlocking rear diff.
The engine sits behind and between the seats with a center-exit, dual-outlet exhaust, and it tows pounds via a 1. Standard equipment includes EPS, a pound winch, side mirrors, turn signals in the heavy-duty front bumper, emergency flashers, adjustable highback seats, roof, windshield, horn, analog-digital display, LED halo lights, and new two-tone aluminum wheels with aggressive Wanda tires.
Not very fast. Hisun claims 65 horsepower, and Can-Am claims 85 horsepower for its Commander engine. Throttle response is good, but acceleration is lethargic compared to other s. Smooth and steady. With a top speed of 50 mph for low range, the CVT tuning could be better for hardcore off-roading. High range is good for up to 70 mph.Red dead redemption 2 brightness settings
The locking front diff is nice, as is the unlocking rear diff, which helps turning and saves turf. The CVs are stout, and the axles are protected by nice aluminum A-arm guards. Also smooth and steady. Aggressive tires and the smooth power delivery also aid turning, but the soft suspension produces a lot of body roll in corners. It slides predictably on harder surfaces, and we were impressed with its sure-footedness on snow and ice.
Pretty good. Long and sturdy A-arms are mated with Yit piggyback shocks with position compression and rebound adjusters and dual-ring preload adjusters. Damping and spring rates are in the ballpark with the standard compression setting of 13 clicks out, front and rear. The shocks do a good job on small hits and trail junk but bottom pretty easily. They heat up pretty quickly in desert whoops. Not very strong. Four-wheel hydraulic brakes with ventilated discs look good on paper, but it takes a lot of pedal pressure to get them to bring the Strike down from speed.
We took the Strike up in the Sierra Madre Mountains, and it was great on the twisty forest trails, snow, ice and slush. To decline or learn more, visit our Cookies page. This page was processed by apollo4 in 0.
